The NQSW Supported Year aims to ensure that all NQSWs entering the workforce have access to support and development opportunities. The focus on development will help consolidate social work education, develop a sense of professional identity and social work practice. Full detail of the approach is available in the NQSW Supported Year overview and guidance 2024.

Employer Role

Employers have a critical role to play in the successful implementation and delivery of the NQSW Supported Year by consistently providing support to all NQSWs in their workforce.

The NQSW Implementation Partnership is committed to national implementation by October 2024 when it will become mandatory for employers to provide the support as set out in Definitions of employer support 2023.

Employers are asked to review the seven areas of employer support and consider what is already in place, what needs to be developed and how to provide support consistently across the organisation.

Employers will

  • Show commitment to the SSSC Codes of Practice for Social Services Employers
  • Establish processes and systems to support NQSWs
  • Provide consistent and accessible support to NQSWs
  • Review policy and provide support for supervisors
  • Attend to workforce considerations
